Magnetic Filters from TIFFEN

I was happy to learn that TIFFEN has started offering filters for photography that employ their Magnetic Control System (MCS), which makes it incredibly easy to attach or detach filters to your lenses using a magnetic mounting system.

You can learn more about the TIFFEN MCS filters in the video below, and you can get a special discount on these filters for a limited time from my friends at Hunt’s Photo & Video here:

Survey Results: Should Subject Face Left or Right?

The results are in for my fun–and certainly not scientific–poll asking photographers whether a subject in a photo should point toward the left or toward the right.

This survey was inspired by a question featured in my Ask Tim Grey eNewsletter, which focused on the recommendation that in bird photography it is best to have the bird facing left rather than right.

My answer in part explained that I personally find that I prefer the subject facing right rather than left, so I was a little amused to find that those who think the subject should face left were in the minority (less than 18%!). Or maybe I influenced the responses by stating my preference in my answer?

In any event, without further ado, here are the survey results:

Free Article: Solar Eclipse Preparation

There will be a total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024, visible to much of North America, and I have a free resource to help you prepare to observe and photograph this event.

The October 2023 issue of my Pixology magazine for photographers included an article with tips on preparing to photograph a total solar eclipse. I’m making that full issue of Pixology available free of charge, so that all photographers can make the most of the upcoming total solar eclipse if they’ll be in an area where it will be visible.

GreyLearning Ultimate Event: The Power of PhotoPills

Registration is now open for my next live online GreyLearning Ultimate Events, focused on “The Power of PhotoPills”. The live online event will be on Wednesday, June 21st, from 1pm to 5pm Eastern Time.

The PhotoPills app for iOS and Android mobile devices provides photographers with a variety of powerful planning tools. With this app you can calculate equivalent exposure settings, such as when adding a solid neutral density filter. You can calculate depth of field with precision, including being able to take into account the effect of hyperfocal distance. You can plan for the specific position of the sun and moon, both for planning for light and for including the sun or moon in the frame with a key subject. And there is so much more to explore in PhotoPills beyond these powerful features!

All GreyLearning Ultimate Events are included at no additional cost in my GreyLearning Ultimate Bundle (http://timgrey.me/atg99bundle). Recordings of all presentations will also available, so you can watch even if you can’t attend live, or review the presentations at any time.

If you’re not a GreyLearning Ultimate Bundle subscriber, that’s OK! Non-subscribers can attend the live online event and access recordings of all presentations for just $20.

You can get all the details of this upcoming live online event here:
